Daily Creative Writing Prompt - 20070901

A plot seed is a slightly different animal than a writing prompt. Instead of an implied story it provides rough outline just begging to be enriched.

The explorers are amazed at their luck; the first plantlike-- treelike even-- species humanity had found lies on the planet below. The crew is geared for interstellar exploration, but profit lures them down to the surface. The first xeno-trees fall to improvised cutters, as the forest turns violent to repel the explorers. Young, mobile versions of the trees try to cut out the human cancer from their wood, but they have no history of warfare and die in droves. The computer breaks the wind shapes into patterns... and alerts the crew they have discovered an intelligent species.

The headless corpse bounced twice before coming to rest in the ditch and Deke, his right arm now missing at the elbow, screamed as he collapsed onto the roadbed. The sky was now a deep purple and the color reflected dully off the exposed skin of the mixed lot of combatants who continued to emerge from the trees on either side to join in with the macabre battle. To my horror I realized that some of them were little more than children but they threw themselves into the fighting without hesitation. They must understand just what was at stake here.

The blade hummed in his hand. Carter's eyes shifted from the vibro-sword to the ichor dripping brimstone monstrosity that hadn't quite emerged from the crater. "New technology, meet old fashioned demonic horror. Is everyone ready Mike?"

The sergeant shrugged. "There's seven of us against an unknown enemy with undocumented supernatural powers. It doesn't stand a chance!"

Another site seed that opens a window to wonder. What do you see? What lies beyond?

With the huge corporate office soaring above the bank of the river, it is odd to see a creek trickling in from that side. A few steps further and the reason becomes apparent: the stone wall holding up the bank is ancient and there is a massive circular opening from which the water pours, standing eight feet in diameter and going back into the darkness as far as the eye can see. To the left of the large hole is another tiny in comparison, square, and only two feet high by three feet wide.

The fog rolled in with dastardly intent. It was a slow moving wave of mist and vapor that crept forward like a thief. The haze was a cloak of menace being laid upon the horizon.

"This is pure madness, even _you_ aren't corrupted enough to try _that._"

In her heart of hearts, Lieutenant Dale knew that he was. He was going to grab the drugs, hide them from the other policemen, and sell the loot right back to them in a week's time. He was getting too daring, too dangerous. And the worst thing was, she couldn't do a damned thing about it.

Hades cleared his throat, the bass rumble shook the floor and great pillars of the hall. The other gods quieted and turned to gaze questioningly at the usually silent god of the Underworld.

"Yes, my brother and keeper of the gates of the dead?" Zeus asked.

"Perhaps I don't understand what the debate is about. If they must be punished, do so. Sink their island and be done with it!"
