Above it all the deep blue of the sky continued to stretch lazily towards the horizon as a gentle wind busied itself pushing tiny puffs of clouds slowly to the east. The heather was tall here and provided a lush frame as I watched it all. Around me the chaos continued but so far I was being left alone; at least for the time being. I knew that I should try to get up; try to flee, to fight. Perhaps I could even do some good before it ended but finding the will just seemed to be beyond my ability.

Something slightly different today...a plot seed from the July 2007 contest:
By: jschoonover
A village is on the warpath and hellbent on lighting a fire under an accused witch. The woman protests her innocence—she insists she is not a witch—but there is no denying that she controls powerful forces. She continuously warns the local priest that she is protecting them from the “evil in the wood” and that they are being foolish. Is she a witch, or something else? Is she friend or foe?

The thin man with the glasses went on : “The second rule of the cell is you do not talk about the cell.” The guy had obviously seen or read Fight Club one time too many. This was perfect. In his mouth, Kyle could feel his canines growing. His employers would be pleased. Loonies like that were bound to see his fangs and just assume. They’d think vampire, not government assassin. It was almost too easy – almost.
Mentally, Kyle thanked Stoker, Browning and Rice for making his job so simple. Then, snarling, he went for the kill.

“Evasive action!” he demanded.
“Soon enough,” the ship coolly responded.
“They're gonna be here in three seconds!”
“You'd think I might know that.” Suddenly Evan was kicked back in seat as the engines lit. “Considering I'm providing you the data.” The ship pirouetted and gyrated through space and the plasma jets scorched everything in their path – including three of the assault drones -- while Evan was mercilessly thrown against the restraint harness.
“Can you please limit the acceleration in here?” he managed to gasp.
“Wuss.”

“Do you remember what it tasted like?” Wyn asked.
“Blue?” the ugly little goblin that used to be Harrold asked in a tinny voice.
The young sorceress sighed and rested her head in her hands. After a few moments she looked up to see the diminutive creature now had its index finger buried in its floppy ear. “Stop that!” she snapped, but the creature continued to dig. “I'll never know what possessed you to drink an unknown potion taken from a dead alchemist's lab. I just wish you in your right mind and body, so I could strangle you!”
The Harrold-goblin blinked and calmly folded its hands in its lap. “Banana,” he said and sagely nodded.

The stone shuddered on the desktop. He continued to chant the mantra as he willed the thumb size rock to do something – anything. Suddenly the stone began to flow like water and twisted itself into a helix. Rin gasped at the sight and the rock stopped moving.
“Concentrate!” Alazar snapped and smacked the boy on the back of the head.
“Sorry Senior.” Rin said as he rubbed the back of his head.
“If you didn't get caught up with yourself, maybe we would have gotten somewhere today. Its easy for a trained sorcerer to change the shape of a rock.” Alazar snapped his fingers and the stone reshaped itself into a perfect cube. “But those are parlor tricks!” |
