Daily Creative Writing Prompt - 20070602

"You've got the key, right lad?" Aghram asked, but didn't wait for an answer. The hulking swordsman flipped backwards off the ledge like he was diving into a lake instead of throwing himself off a mountain.

Quinn rushed to the edge, but Aghram was gone. There was no sign of him; no flailing body, no bloody smear on the rocks far below, nothing. Quinn looked at the "key" clutched in his right hand -- a well worn hawk's feather. The god that designed this portal had a dark sense of humor indeed.

The ship, well what was left of a ship, hung enormous in space before the Halifax.

"Scan the local volume. Is anybody out here?" Tessa queried her ship.

"No emissions within 500 kilometers," the monotone voice responded in her ear.

Tessa smiled wide and opened the general communications channel. "Rules of space. She's all ours!" A chorus of cheers reverberated throughout the vessel.

Thieran scanned the crowd of the jazz club. The trumpeter led the band in a sinuous tune. The PI quickly spotted Lar at a table near the back -- it was tough to miss the seven foot muscled brute, but he did look good in his gray pinstripe and red silk shirt. An ex-boxer turned con and a ex-con turned PI; Thieran shook his head and approached Lar's table.

"We've got a lot to catch up on," he said as he slid into the seat across from the mountain of a man.

The bureaucrat sighed and put down his stamp. "Do you have any idea how much trouble this is going to cause?" His aide wrung his hands and nodded meekly. "Consider this a learning experience. You get to call the Big Guy and explain that because you routed the forms incorrectly all the poor souls that died in England on the 13th wound up in the wrong place."
