Ariel sailed through the engineering section to the communications panel. She pressed the button for the general band. "I'm sorry folks, we're experiencing a minor engine problem. I promise we'll be underway soon." Zero-g was second nature to her -- she lived most of her life in it -- but Ariel hated to think of the mess the evacuees stuffed into the cargo hold were making.

Tanaka stared at the steps cut into the mountainside. They wove back and forth as they ascended; he counted seventeen switchbacks before they eventually disappeared around the curve of the visible face. "How many steps?"
"According to the map: 'We must climb the Fifteen Thousand Steps' before we reach the gates of Hurai. Then after that..."
"Why did I let you talk me into this?" Tanaka interrupted as he set foot on the first step.

Moro considered the question and stared into the heart of the flames. His eyes saw the fort and small town as he remembered it before they left.

"What is Biter?" the left goblin mewled to his companion as it uncovered more of the half buried object.
"Gah, I no know Fung!" Biter replied as he watched his companion uncover the smooth boulder-that-wasn't from the earth.
After Fung uncovered the majority of the object he stepped back with Biter. "Look like big bird egg." His companion pounded him on the shoulder and then moved closer to the "big bird egg."
"No bird egg dummy. You ever see bird dis big?"

The ten Scarlet Fist thugs hesitated as they approached Tao. Fifteen of their brothers rested in a tangle of bodies around the warrior. Tao stepped through the mess of fallen thugs and saluted the new wave with his staff.

The skimmer dropped through the gas giant's atmosphere like a stone. Heat and stress warnings flashed across Kay's vision, but she smirked and pushed the craft harder. Kay rocketed clear of the turbulent layer and pulled out of the dive; the nanopolymer hull responded to her will and took on a more aerodynamic shape.
"No chance boys! You can fight for second place!" Kay taunted over the general band to the drove of skimmers following in her wake.

Valkyries are minor female deities, who served Odin. The valkyries' purpose was to choose the most heroic of those who had died in battle and to carry them off to Valhalla; Odin needed warriors to fight at his side at the preordained battle at the end of the world.
However contrary to popular depictions, they did not ride winged horses. Their mounts were packs of wolves that were gruesome and war-like. And the valkyrie is associated with the raven, that also frequented ancient battlefields and chose corpses.
