Lee heard a sound over the sighing of the pine trees and stopped in his tracks. He turned a quick revolution looking for whatever made the noise, but he only saw snow dusted pine and heard the crunch of old snow beneath his boots. If he mentioned this to the locals they'd laugh -- city-folk jumping at the slightest sound -- but Lee remembered the last time he'd visited his grandfather's cabin.

The klaxon wailed. Atraeus grimaced and sent the command to cut off the siren as he accepted the datafeed from the freighter's cameras and sensors. His scowl deepened as he sailed through the command deck to reach the acceleration couch. Two unidentified ships were on a high-g approach.

Deep in the Valley of Red Leaves on the edge of the Lake of Reflections, the Fey Prince contemplated the future revealed in the calm waters. He sat perched on one of the mammoth and twisted roots of Grandfather Tree who guarded the Lake; the cool autumn breeze rustled the Gradfather's leaves far overhead. The Fey Prince frowned and touched the water to dispel the image.
