I am looking for ideas to add to a the setting of a old house owned by a line of magicians beside what I have come up with on my own to give it a feeling of haveing been redesigned and haveing bits added to it over the years by different owners with dirffent tastes and interests.

History.
A house built in the late 1800’s by a wealthy landowner and industrialist named Cletus Caul who, while he didn’t practice magic himself, had relatives who did, and at least one child of his own showing early talent and interest in it. He build the house using half understood theory on significant numbers, shapes, and symbols to make it into a mystic stronghold against the supernatural and a place of power for his descendants.

After Cletus died he left the house in the care of his daughter under a family trust, who passed it on to her last apprentice, a neice, and so on for six generation of mystics all adding their own protective devices and symbols which may or may not be all that effective.

The grounds.
A lot one hundred and forty four feet across, 12 x 12, was selected by the side of a mountain lake where his grandfathers cabin had stood, a few oak and other native trees he beloved to have use were left standing while other were planted near the outer wall like yew, hawthorn and ash, along with a few fruit trees because it’s always nice to have your own fruit.

A low three foot brick wall with glazed brinks laid in protective patterns encircled the lot on for side and a similar retaining wall goes along the water front, the wall facing land is topped with wrought iron fencing going up to a spiked top. A brick pillar toped with a cement orb support the metal fences every eight feet, the pillars have a hollow space under the decorative orb containing a small leather bag containing fetishes blessed by a shaman of the local Indian tribe, a iron horse shoe, and a silk bag containing bit and pieces of stuff that Cletus’s cook, a practitioner of voodoo, assured him would ward away evil.

The wall is broken by four gate held by wrought iron gates with a set of extra pillars standing to either side topped with guardian statues. Native American colors and Chinese guardian animals.

Red stones Dragons facing the town across the lake.
White eagles facing the highway to the south.
Black Tigers facing the national forest to the west
Blue turtles facing the mountains to the north

The south west corner contains a tall garage made of stone brought up from deep in a local mine to symbolize earth. The garage itself open out to a road a small apartment over the garage turns it into a residence with it’s own threshold creating a stronger barrier to the supernatural then the outer fence itself.

The south east corner contains a small boat house and dock symbolizing water with a walk way running along the water line to the lakeside gate. While the boat house itself is inside the fence line it does not have a entrance allowing passage with in the grounds.

The North east Corner contains a wooden gazebo built on the high point of spur of land overlooking the lake, the gazebo is has is filled with and surrounded by bird houses, feeders and wind chimes symbolizing air. The gazebo rests on a ice house of stone carried down from the mountains which is no longer used.

The North west corner contains the remains of a old cabin which had burned to the ground, the only remnant being a fireplace and chimney made of baked brick which symbolizes fire. The fireplace is functional has been used as a blacksmith’s forge and barbeque pit at various times over the years.

A brick walk way is laid in a circle around the main house with eight walk ways leading out to the four gates and corner structures.

In addition there is a small area with a few family graves. Not symbolic for anything, there are just there.

The house
The house itself is a octagonal brick building, two stories tall with a attic space enlarge with four dormers and basement. The house is made with brick made from native clays laying on a foundation made with a mix of stones from local river bed, mountains and the mines. Four pouches on each of the four sides has a brick wall one foot wide and two foot tall supporting 4 pillar supporting the overhanging roof. A brick railing on the sides of the central steps each has the same guardians animals as the outer gates on either side.

At some point someone decided that painting over the house in white would be a good idea and it has been less trouble to put up new coats then try to remove it.

Ground floor.
South, a living room in summer color and a stairway to the second story.
East is a study in fall colors with a door leading to a bathroom in the northwest corner and a door leading to a small office space in the southwest. A fireplace is set in the inner wall.
North is a dinging room in winter colors and another staircase.
West is a kitchen in spring colors, with a door leading to a bathroom in the southeast corner and a pantry in the northeast corner.
The central hall contains sliding door with winter and summer themed stained glass inside the frames, open door ways to the east and west. The central room has large black and white marble tiles laid out in a eight by eight checker board pattern. Four wood paneled steel support rise up to the under side of a central second story balcony rising up to vaulted ceiling and a eight armed chandelier.

Below is a large room running underneath from north to south, the rooms to the sides had once contained coal burning furnaces which vented up the chimney stacks, but have since been turned into a laundry room on the east side and a storage room with a emergency generator on the west side.

The Northwest corner had been a firewood storage room to symbolize fire, but now holds the gas burning furnace.
The Southwest corner had held the coal supply to symbolize earth, but now hold contains a collection of tools which seem to do the same job.
The South east corner contains a remodeled bathroom opening for water.
The North east corner had been a ice cellar for a symbol of air, but now contains a central air unit when vents out the former chute for getting the ice into the house.

The second story has the balcony which the stair from the front room and dining room lead up to, two large bedrooms to the east and west with Fall and spring decorations and small fireplaces. The north and south contain small bedrooms opening into short hallway containing stair to the attic with a winter and summer themes. Two bathroom open up on the north and south wall of the balcony and take up the northwest and southeast corner as well as parts of the north and south sides of the house, each is large enough for a tub.
The southwest and north east corner contain walk in closets from the two larger bedrooms.

The attic has three window dormer in each of the four directions, wooden beams top the steel support from below and meet wooden cross beam above leaving a open upper area up to the roof.
The East and west dorm have the chimney running up in front of them and contain small doors to the north and south leading to attic storage under the eaves. The dorm to the north and south have benches built in with pull out drawers below. All the full height wall either have build in book cases or the door to the two stair cases which lead in. Two small wood burning stoves are mounted to the two chimneys. A heavy wooded table is fixed to the floor in the middle of the room with a marble chess board built in and a drawer on each of the eight sides.

The roof is topped with a eight side copula with a window in each direction, a eight sided mirror hang inside the copula so that sunlight shines down on the table below at anytime of the day, a series of carving in the table and support beams indicate the time of day and year by spots marked on the mirror.

Magic Defenses Eh?

I have always thought that no magical defense is complete without a magical circle or two.
First run a circular path around around the interior of the walls.
Then run paths so that you inscribe an octagram inside the circle.
Ideally the walls of the house would fall along the octagon formed by the interior of the octagram.
Then inside the attic drop as big a pentagram as possible on the floor.
Inside the Pentacle formed by the pentagram you can have another of your favorite circles.

If my description is unclear check this out:

Under the paths outside should be buried a continuous iron pipe. Pack the pipe with Salt/Hoodoo Dust/Grave Yard Dirt/whatever other protective substance you want.

Once could also draw water off of the river to form a moat around the exterior walls.

Given the type of defenses you are giving this place, your characters are going to have to piss off a really big bad guy .
